In a good novel we can really lose ourselves, immerse ourselves in another world. And before we know it, hours have passed before we even look up from the book. This works particularly well with Thrillers that captivate us with their plot twists and won’t let us rest until we know what really happened. 1. “The Sanatorium” by Sarah Pearse
A remote luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps becomes the scene of the murder in Sarah Pearse’s thriller “The Sanatorium”. As soon as he arrives at “Le Sommet”, Detective Inspector Elin Warner feels uneasy. She blames the building’s grim past as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. But when people suddenly disappear, murders happen and the hotel is cut off from the outside world by a snowstorm, the policewoman suspects something bad.
Sarah Pearse has been in with Elin Warner “The sanatorium” created a multifaceted protagonist that we learn more about from page to page, while Warner simultaneously battles her own trauma to find the killer at the hotel.
2. “The Dumb Patient” by Alex Michaelides
Successful painter Alicia Berenson was found next to her husband’s body and blamed for his murder. Since she hasn’t spoken a word since the night of his death, she has been in a closed psychiatric institution ever since – and is silent there too. Psychotherapist Theo Faber’s goal is to get Alicia to talk and uncover what really happened on the night of the murder.
Even if the conclusions and descriptions of the human psyche in “The Silent Patient” have their weaknesses, Alex Michaelides’ thriller convinces with really surprising plot twists.
3. “Believe Me” by Alice Feeney
In “Believe Me” Alice Feeney has the journalist Anna Andrews meet her ex-husband, the police officer Jack Harper, as part of a research. Both are back in their hometown because of the murder of a young woman. It quickly becomes clear that Jack has more to do with the case than he initially wants to admit.
With “Believe me” Alice Feeney succeeds in creating an exciting thriller that will keep you in suspense until the last page.
4. “Afterglow” by Lucy Foley
Not everything is as it seems in this elegant apartment building in the Montmartre district of Paris. In “Afterglow,” Lucy Foley lets young Jess visit her brother, who has recently taken up residence in said house in Paris. However, Ben is not in his apartment – and nobody knows where he went. The longer Jess is in the old house looking for Ben, the more she feels that a dark secret is connecting the house and its residents.
Lucy Foley cocks in “afterglow” skilfully manages the arc of suspense and keeps surprising her readers with ingenious plot twists.
5. “Protect Her” directed by Laura Dave
One day a girl hands Hannah a note with only two words on it: “Protect her”. In Laura Dave’s thriller of the same name, Hannah sets out to find her husband Owen, who suddenly disappears, and to solve the mystery of the mysterious assignment.
Whom Laura Dave’s Thriller “Protect Her” in book form is not enough: The story has just been filmed with Jennifer Garner in the leading role for a series on Apple TV (under the original English title “The Last Thing He Told Me”).
