The protagonist of this book is Archibald Ferguson, and the readers accompany him through his life. Or rather through four variations of his life, which Paul Auster created on a huge 1264 pages. True to the motto "What if …?" the author creates a portrait of American society in the second half of the 20th century, with a focus on a boy who has to overcome adventure, love, family and strokes of fate.
