Borderline dilemma – lack of insurance: e-scooter drivers punished

Anyone who drives across the border to Bavaria with an e-scooter has to pay. Salzburgers who use their electric vehicle in Germany face a fine of 40 euros. Because there, e-scooters need their own liability insurance including a sticker. The problem with this is that there is no such insurance in Austria.

A 43-year-old from Wals-Siezenheim was amazed when she was checked by Bavarian police officers. She was fined for the trip across the border with the e-scooter. The reason: You could not show any liability insurance including the mandatory sticker for the vehicle. The same thing happened to a 52-year-old from Salzburg – he had not insured his e-scooter either.

Both knew nothing of the compulsory insurance in Germany. In this case, however, ignorance does not protect. “Both expect criminal proceedings for an offense under the compulsory insurance law,” emphasizes the Freilassing police station, which has recently been punishing Austrians more and more frequently. Cost: 40 euros.

While in Austria the same rules apply to e-scooters up to 25 kilometers per hour as to bicycles, in Germany you need liability insurance from 6 km / h. In addition, a corresponding sticker must be attached to the rear of the vehicle.

The problem is not just the different legal situation. “In Austria there is de facto no such insurance for e-scooters. And in Germany, too, I can only take out this insurance if I have my main residence there, ”explains Aloisia Gurtner from ÖAMTC Salzburg. There they are already working on a solution to the problem with the insurance wise men. Until then, e-scooter drivers are advised not to drive across the border.
