Brave lifesaver – “One day I will stand on the summit again”

A stroke of fate suddenly changes the life of a mountain rescuer. A wave of willingness to help comes from his comrades: They organized a fundraising ski tour that will take place on Saturday, March 16th.

It should have been a nice climbing trip with friends. But on June 14th. In 2023, Gilbert Kohlhuber’s life changed suddenly. “We went climbing in Malta with a friend’s child,” says the passionate cook. “The boy didn’t dare to go any further, he was scared and he was completely beside himself. “I rushed to help, tried to calm him down and let us abseil down,” recalls the 31-year-old. Then the tragic accident happened. “We fell eight meters into the depths.” Gilbert’s thoughts were entirely on the child. “I did everything I could to prevent it from hitting the hard, rocky ground,” says the Liesertaler, who became a lifesaver at that moment. While the little boy escaped with minor injuries, the mountain rescuer in training had to pay dearly for his willingness to help. “I couldn’t move anymore, I couldn’t breathe. For a short time I couldn’t see anything anymore.” After a month-long hospital stay and several operations, life seemed to be over for Gilbert, who is dependent on a wheelchair. “I just didn’t see any point anymore and gave up,” the restaurateur remembers of his psychological low. “I don’t give up, I keep fighting.” But his mountain rescue comrades from the Lieser-Maltatal and his family continually encouraged him. “It was you who gave me back the will to live.” Kohlhuber now has a big goal: “I will fight, I want to be on the summit and in the kitchen again one day!” Starting numbers are handed out from 9 a.m. Entry fee: 25 euros (food included). The run was also co-organized by the Aschbacher family (Almstüberl) and Guido Schiffer (Schiffer Sports School, Innerkrems). The ascent height is around 500 meters. Event with non-cash prizes and award ceremony Ski touring run for a good cause The mountain rescuers want to collect donations for their comrade with a ski touring run that leads to the Schilchernock on Saturday, March 16th (starting at 10:15 a.m. at the Almstüberl in Schönfeld). “It’s about a good cause – for our Gilbert, who, no matter what happens, will always have a place in the mountain rescue!” says Matthias Baier on behalf of everyone.
