Brussels will withdraw the proposed regulation on pesticides – 02/06/2024 at 3:40 p.m.

(AOF) – The proposed regulation on pesticides “has become a symbol of polarization, which is why I will propose to the college to withdraw this proposal”. This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in a speech made public on Tuesday. She underlines that the regulation “relating to the sustainable use of plant protection products” was rejected by the European Parliament in November 2023, and “that there is no more progress in the Council either” on this text.

“Farmers will continue to be poisoned and nature degraded, while the pesticide industry will reap huge profits,” denounces the NGO Friends of the Earth on X.

The announcement made this morning by President Ursula von der Leyen on the withdrawal of the proposal “ends an impasse” welcomes Christiane Lambert, president of the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organizations. This “top-down” proposal was “poorly designed, poorly evaluated, poorly financed, and offered few alternatives to farmers,” she judges.
