Burkina Faso: The army says it has deposed the president, suspends the Constitution

OUAGADOUGOU, Jan 24 (Reuters) – Burkina Faso’s military said on Monday it had overthrown President Roch Kabore, suspended the constitution and dissolved the government and National Assembly.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba and read by another officer on national television.

The army emphasizes that its seizure of power took place without violence and that those arrested are in a safe place. (Thiam Ndiaga in Ouagadougou and Bate Felix in Dakar, written by Estelle Shirbon, French version Camille Raynaud, edited by Bertrand Boucey)
