The removal is planned for November 3rd to 5th by helicopter, the fire brigade said on Friday when asked by the DPA news agency. The decisive factor is the weather.
The rescue workers have been preparing the transport on the mountain west of Lake Maggiore since around mid-October. With chainsaws they felled trees on the wooded slope, secured the gondola with scaffolding and separated the cabin from the suspension structure. They dismantled the cabin into smaller parts.
The gondola with 15 people on board fell on Whitsunday (23 May) shortly before the mountain station because the pulling rope broke. Actually, the emergency brakes should have prevented the accident, but they were blocked by brackets and therefore could not grip the suspension cable. They are said to have disrupted ongoing operations beforehand. The gondola rushed downhill, jumped out of its suspension and crashed into a wooded area. The authorities subsequently investigated the employees of the operating company.
Only Eitan, a young boy from Israel, survived the accident. He lost his parents and great-grandparents in the accident. Later he stayed with his aunt in Pavia. A custody battle broke out between her and her relatives in Israel, in which the grandfather brought the boy to Israel. A court there recently ruled that Eitan should go back to Italy.
