(BFM Bourse) – The ownership of the capital of companies in the Parisian index by non-resident investors in France is generally stable compared to 2021, according to an article from the Banque de France which however only retained 35 values out of 40, excluding groups headquartered outside France.
Non-resident individuals and investors in France held 40.3% of the capital of French CAC 40 companies in 2022, a figure stable over one year, the Banque de France indicated on Friday.
The detention rate in 2021 was 40.4%. Maintaining the proportion in 2022 reinforces the rebound compared to 2020, when the detention rate fell to 39.4%.
It was then the lowest level since 2008, when data from the Banque de France goes back. The 2022 figure is still far from the 47.8% ownership by non-residents observed in 2013.

Five groups excluded from the sample
Eurozone member countries and the United States constitute the majority of these foreign holders (78.2% between them in 2022).
The Banque de France counted 35 French CAC 40 companies resident in France at the end of 2022, excluding Airbus, ArcelorMittal, Eurofins Scientific, Stellantis and STMicroelectronics from the study because their head office is abroad. Edenred, which entered the CAC 40 in 2023, is not there either.
Among these 35 companies, 12 were majority owned by non-residents.
In detail, foreign investors mainly sold in “activities linked to finance and real estate” as well as in consumer goods and services, according to the bulletin. These withdrawals were offset by purchases in industry and energy.
Across the Paris Stock Exchange, non-residents hold 36.7% of the capital of French companies, “the lowest level among the main European countries”. This rate is more than 50% in Spain and Germany, and even 85% in the Netherlands, cites the Banque de France.
