California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Friday that he wants to introduce compulsory vaccination for all school children. This as soon as there is an approved child vaccination for all age groups. The west coast state is the first US state to introduce compulsory corona vaccination in all schools.
«We want to end this pandemic. We’re all exhausted by it, ”Newsom said in his address to a school. He pointed out that vaccinations for diseases such as measles and mumps are already mandatory for school attendance.
Already mandatory vaccinations and tests for teachers
The introduction of compulsory vaccinations from elementary school onwards will only apply once the vaccines have been fully approved by the US FDA. In August, the agency had fully approved Biontech and Pfizer’s product for people aged 16 and over as the first vaccine in the United States. For young people from the age of twelve, the emergency approval continues to apply.
California has prescribed corona vaccinations or regular tests for teachers and school staff since August. Accordingly, the more than 300,000 teachers and employees at schools either have to provide proof of vaccination or undergo weekly coronavirus tests. (SDA)
Child vaccinations: more difficult and expensive
Corona vaccination is currently also approved in Switzerland for adolescents aged twelve and over. Regarding the vaccination of children under twelve, the Federal Commission for Vaccination Issues is still waiting for reliable data. However, vaccination will not be child’s play even if the green light is given. “It is not just the consultation that is more difficult,” says Philipp Jenny, President of the Association for Pediatrics Switzerland. “The fears of the vaccination act itself are greater and the children must be prepared accordingly and guided through the vaccination with feeling.” In addition to a higher vaccination fee, Jenny therefore also requests individual doses so that the vaccinations can be integrated into the consultation hour. Negotiations are ongoing between health insurers, cantons and doctors about a corresponding compensation.
