Camping: Practical tips for the vacation

Where can I spend my summer vacation this year? This question concerns many people during the Corona pandemic. Camping is currently a popular alternative to hotel vacations. Camping has been permitted in all federal states since the end of May. As a newbie to camping, there are a few things you should be aware of, says Isabel Speckmann, author of "The 500 Best Camper Hacks You Must Know". In an interview with the news agency spot on news, the camping professional reveals what should not be missing on any packing list and how camping holidays can be a success.

In the Corona crisis, many prefer to go on a camping instead of a beach vacation – a good alternative?

Isabel Speckmann: Camping is a great form of travel. But nowadays, a camping holiday combines many practical aspects. As a camper you have your own four walls, your own bed, your personal toilet and as soon as the fridge is full you can enjoy the independence of camping. However, anyone who hopes that they can switch destinations as they please, i.e. coast today and sightseeing tomorrow, will unfortunately soon reach their limits. The places are very full at the moment.

Tent, camper or caravan? What would you recommend to newbies?

Speckmann: The sanitary buildings on many campsites are currently still closed due to the corona regulations. As a result, the vast majority of tent meadows are not yet available again. But if you want to go camping or to travel with a caravan that has no toilet and shower on board, you should definitely inform yourself about the current conditions on site. Away from Corona, it's a matter of taste and wallet. Young people who may not have quite as much money in their vacation budget will surely be very happy with a tent vacation.

Caravans – caravans – are particularly suitable for families. Because caravans and awnings often offer a little more space. The caravan can be stuck on a nice campsite during the holiday and the family still has the car to explore the surroundings.

What about Corona times? Are there any changes in how to behave on the pitch?

Speckmann: When it comes to camping, there is currently the problem that there are practically no uniform regulations. In some federal states, regulations are still relatively strict. Campsites may only be occupied by a maximum of 50 percent and in some places there are even campsites that only accept guests who have reserved at least three days in advance. In other federal states, Corona has little impact on camping holidays. The only thing that still applies everywhere today: mask requirement.

How do I choose the right campsite?

Speckmann: The internet is a huge help in finding the perfect campsite. Otherwise there are many campsite guides and some apps. There are two approaches to the search: you either have a fixed region in mind and look for a campsite within this region. But if you are looking for something special – e.g. a campsite with a farm – you should put the region in the back. Instead, the first thing to look for is the type of space. I can only give everyone the tip to explore new or rather unknown regions. Small pearls are often found on site.

What should you watch out for when renting a camper?

Speckmann: The big question is always: Do you rent privately or through a portal. In private, it is very important to make sure that it is entered in the vehicle registration certificate that this vehicle is approved as a "self-drive rental vehicle". If this entry is not available: hands away! Then there can be big problems with the insurance. Renting through a professional landlord is the safer option. At the moment there are even some portals that offer a corona package. If there is a second wave or a second lockdown, the tenants can rebook for next year free of charge.

What will this cost me?

Speckmann: The costs are primarily dependent on the vehicle and the season. A small, older van can be rented from around 60 euros per day. The slightly larger motorhomes up to 3.5 tons can also cost over 150 euros per night in summer. There is usually a certain number of free kilometers. If you still cover longer distances, each kilometer traveled costs a few cents. Then there is a cleaning fee and costs such as refueling, camping and parking space costs, groceries, etc.

Which equipment should be packed up?

Speckmann: If you rent a motorhome or caravan, it is common for the typical camping accessories to be included in the vehicle. So e.g. Camping chairs, table, power cables, ramps, a water hose as well as dishes and cutlery. As a "rental camper" it definitely makes sense to take a sensible multitool à la Leatherman or a pocket knife with you. In addition, you always need bed linen, washing-up liquid with a sponge, a hand brush, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, disinfectants and protective masks.

Whatever is helpful: A good power bank for cell phones and other electronic devices – should the shore power not work at all.

Can I take my dog to the campsite?

Speckmann: Yes, dogs are allowed on a large number of pitches and campsites. In the meantime there are even campsites that have a lot of nice gadgets such as offer a dog shower between the plot and the beach. However, it is also the case that you pay an extra dog fee at most campsites. If you want to spend your camping holiday on a specific lake, you should inquire in advance whether dogs are really allowed on the pitch. Because especially at campsites on lakes there is a general ban on dogs.

When should you reserve for this summer?

Speckmann: There is only one thing left for this summer: as quickly as possible. Otherwise, reservations are usually made approximately six months in advance.
