CAN 2022: the referee of Tunisia-Mali hospitalized, why this match turned into chaos

The referee of the match between Tunisia and Mali, this Wednesday, January 12, whistled the end of the meeting while there were still several minutes to play. He was immediately taken to the hospital to carry out a battery of tests.

It’s a match that will go down in African football history but not for good reason. This Tuesday, January 12, Mali faced Tunisia in the group stage of the 2022 African Cup of Nations organized in Cameroon. While Mali was leading 1 goal to 0, the referee of the match, Janny Sikazwe, decided to signal the end of the match in the 85th minute with five minutes left to play.

Quickly realizing his mistake, which could have been anecdotal, he then decided to restart the match before interrupting it, this time definitively, in the 90th minute when regulation time was not yet completely over. (there were about thirty seconds left) and that the stoppages were going to be announced (at least 3 additional minutes). The Tunisian players and staff then cried foul, rushing to the referee to ask him the reasons for his action. But what could have happened to Janny Sikazwe, this experienced Zambian referee?

A sunstroke for the referee of the meeting between Tunisia and Mali?

According to the latest information, it would have been simply victim of sunstroke. Janny Sikazwe was also taken to the hospital at the end of this meeting between Mali and Tunisia in order to carry out a battery of tests. At present, no decision has been taken by the organizers of the CAN on the follow-up to be given to this case. As a reminder, the thermometer currently in Cameroon easily exceeds 30 degrees and although it is winter in this part of the world, the sun is very strong.
