The Canal+ program “Les Nouveaux explorers” offers a new issue on Thursday evening entitled “The scouts of healing: repairing the brain”. Its co-producer Laurent Robert Thibierge explains to the microphone of Europe 1 why scientific and medical research on the brain is fascinating.

It is still the most mysterious organ of the human body for doctors. Some scientists spend decades trying to understand how it works to better treat pathologies. A new issue of New Explorers de Canal+ is passionate about scientific and medical research on the brain. This episode of the show focuses in particular on the work of Jocelyne Bloch and Grégoire Courtine, a neurosurgeon and a neuroscientist. Together, they have succeeded, thanks to new technologies, in making young paraplegics walk again by reconnecting their brains to their legs. A world first whose images are spectacular.

“We launched this documentary film because we are fascinated by great researchers. For us, they are the superheroes of modern times”, explains to Europe 1 Laurent Robert Thibierge, the co-producer of the film with Simone Harari Baulieu. “They sometimes fight for a lifetime, because scientific and medical research is long. The brain is very mysterious. And what is extraordinary is that we are progressing: researchers invent and discover new things every days. It’s often breathtaking, because they do it with very little knowledge. They are well aware that we are only at the beginning of this research which allows us to better understand our brain.”

“Their discoveries are all incredible”

The film is also interested in other scientists like Etienne Emile Baulieu, a doctor of medicine and science. At 95, he continues to work on a molecule capable of curing resistant depression.

“All researchers are optimistic”, observes Laurent Robert Thibierge. “They know that if they progress, there will be results. Everyone hopes it can go faster. But medical research takes a long time. One of the obstacles is to resist this long time. The brain is fascinating, because you understand so little about it. And the researchers are starting to understand more and more. Their findings are all amazing.”

The documentary Pathfinders of Healing: Fixing the Brain, directed by Tatiana Vincent and Sandie Keignaert, can be seen Thursday evening at 11:40 p.m. on Canal+. The film will also be available on MyCanal.
