In a few days, you will be able to say goodbye to the ordeal of terminating a contract or a subscription. Indeed, on September 1, the government will finally put in place its measure aimed at simplifying the process, via a button available directly on the company’s website. We explain everything you need to know.
We’ve been waiting for it for a year now. Last March, the government announced that its law of August 16, 2022 on emergency measures for the protection of purchasing power will come into force on June 1, 2023. Finally, it will have been necessary to wait 3 additional months, the time to allow the companies concerned to do what is necessary to comply with the new regulations, but this time that’s it: this Friday, September 1, terminating any contract or subscription will become easy as pie.
Concretely, you will be able to say goodbye to the long termination letters to be written and then sent by registered mail to end a contract. Starting next month, all you have to do is go to the website of the company you want to part ways with and find an “unsubscribe” button there. By clicking on it, you will be accompanied through all the stages of the termination, without having to leave your couch and in just a few minutes. If this button does not appear, the company is liable to a fine of 15,000 euros (75,000 euros in the case of a legal person).
Canceling a subscription will no longer be an ordeal from September 1st
“By simplifying the possibility of termination, we want to promote the power of consumer choice and thus avoid them having procedures that are far too complex which could encourage them not to initiate a termination process for a service they no longer use. and that they would continue to pay in spite of everything”, explains Olivia Grégoire, Minister Delegate in charge of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Trade, Crafts and Tourism.

It should however be specified that if the termination procedure will be greatly simplified, the clauses of the contracts will not be modified. In other words, if the latter commits you to a certain period of time and you cancel your subscription along the way, it is very likely that you will have to pay cancellation fees, unless otherwise specified in the document. So be careful not to rush without thinking.
