Canon EOS R6 II: a hair-raising burst mode camera

Two years after the first version, Canon unveiled its new EOS R6 Mark II on Wednesday, capable of taking shots at 40 frames per second for less than 3000 euros.

While Canon seems to have completed its range of digital cameras with the full frame models EOS R6, EOS R5 and EOS R3, and the APS-C models EOS R7 and EOS R10, it is time for the Japanese manufacturer to decline the successors of these different ranges.

This Wednesday, Canon announced its new mid-range hybrid camera, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, logically taking over from the first EOS R6 of the name. As a reminder, this case was presented in July 2020 and was then positioned as the most accessible model in the range of full frame sensor cameras at Canon. It was then equipped with a 20 megapixel sensor, could capture video sequences in 4K at 60p and allowed to take burst photos up to 20 frames per second.

For its new EOS R6 Mark II, Canon has retained the main guidelines of the first model, but incorporates a better definition photo sensor, at 24 megapixels. It also benefits from mechanical stabilization allowing, in principle, to gain up to 8 stops of exposure with a compatible photo lens.

Burst mode up to 40 frames per second

But even outside of the sensor, the Canon EOS R6 Mark II above all takes a leap forward in its shooting performance, both in photos and in video. The new case thus goes from 20 to 40 images per second with autofocus tracking and the electronic shutter. For video, the device is this time capable of capturing sequences in 4K 60p internally and up to 6K 60p with the Apple ProRes RAW codec – provided you take advantage of an external HDMI recorder Atomos Ninja V +. A Full HD mode at 180 frames per second is also offered for slow-motion videos. Note however that the sensitivity range remains identical to the first version, from 100 to 102,400 ISO. The mechanical shutter allows you to capture shots up to 1/8000 s while the electronic shutter can go up to 1/16000 s.

Regarding ergonomics, the Canon EOS R6 II benefits from a rotating LCD screen on ball joint and 3-inch touch screen displaying 1.62 million points. It also benefits from an OLED viewfinder with 3.69 million points at 120 Hz. Finally, for connectivity, the Canon EOS R6 II benefits from two SD card slots, a USB-C socket, a micro-HDMI output, a microphone input in mini-jack format and a headphone output in the same format. The device is also Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatible for photo transfer and remote smartphone viewing.

The Canon EOS R6 II will go on sale at the end of November at a price of 2899 euros without lens. A price up from the 2699 euros of the first version. As a kit, the case will be displayed at 3259 euros with a 24-105 mm (f / 4-7.1) lens or at 4199 euros with a 24-105 mm (f / 4) lens.
