Capitol Storm Committee: Pelosi appoints another Trump critic

Pelosi appoints another Trump critic

The spokeswoman for the US House of Representatives remains steadfast: Despite resistance from the Republicans, Nancy Pelosi wants to enforce the committee of inquiry to clarify the storm on the Capitol – and appoints another Trump critic.

Republican MP Adam Kinzinger will also serve on the committee of inquiry into the storming of the US Capitol. The President of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, appointed the critic of ex-President Donald Trump to the committee. Kinzinger had voted for Trump’s impeachment because of the storm of supporters of the then president on the Capitol on January 6th.

Kinzinger said he had sworn an oath to uphold and defend the constitution. “This moment requires a serious, clear-sighted, non-partisan approach.” The MPs are “obliged to undertake a full investigation into the worst attack on the Capitol since 1814 and to ensure that such a thing can never happen again.”

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy reacted angrily to Kinzinger’s appeal by Pelosi. She has nominated MPs who “share her preconceived narrative”. The committee will not be able to carry out “a serious investigation”.

The committee, which includes Kinzinger, Republican Trump critic Liz Cheney and seven Democratic MPs, is to be headed by Democratic MP Bennie Thompson. After Pelosi rejected two MPs proposed by McCarthy last week because of their close proximity to Trump, McCarthy withdrew all five of his proposed candidates.

Black day for democracy

The storming of the Capitol on January 6th had rocked the United States and is considered a black day in the history of US democracy. Radical Trump supporters had attacked the seat of Congress when the election victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election on November 3 was to be certified there.

Five people were killed in the violence, including a police officer. Trump had previously repeated his completely unsubstantiated accusation of massive election fraud during a performance in front of supporters in Washington and urged his audience to march to the Capitol and “fight the hell out of it”.

The Democrats subsequently initiated impeachment proceedings against Trump, which ultimately failed in the Senate. The ruling party then wanted to set up an independent and cross-party investigative commission to uncover the exact background of the attack. The model was a commission set up after the September 11, 2001 attacks. The project failed due to resistance from the Republicans in the Senate.

The Democrats therefore rely on a House of Representatives committee of inquiry, in which they have a clear majority. Kinzinger and Cheney were the only Republicans who voted to set up the committee, due to begin its work Tuesday.
