US sitcom star Cara Williams is dead. The actress, who was nominated for an Oscar in 1958, was 96 years old.

US actress Cara Williams is dead. Williams was best known for her role in “Escape in Chains” (1958), which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and numerous sitcoms in the 1960s. The actress was 96 years old.

Williams’ daughter Justine Jagoda confirmed “The Hollywood Reporter”that her mother died on Thursday, December 9th, after having had a heart attack at home in Beverly Hills. “My mother was a loving soul, she hugged you and always helped you,” recalls Jagoda.

Oscar nomination for “Escape in Chains”

Cara Williams was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935 and started her film career in 1941 under the stage name Bernice Kay. By the late 1950s, Williams appeared in more than a dozen feature films, her breakthrough came in 1958 with “Escape in Chains”, for which she received an Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination. In the 1960s Williams was mainly seen in sitcoms, from around 1960 in “Pete and Gladys”. In 1978 she stood in front of the camera for the last time. She then began a career as an interior designer.

Williams has been married three times: their first two marriages have two children. From 1952 to 1959 she was married to actor John Drew Barrymore (1932-2004), the father of actress Drew Barrymore (46). Williams was married to her third husband, Asher Dann, until his death in 2018.
