Carlo von Tiedemann has had very difficult weeks. Clinic, operations, rehabilitation. He hopes he’s out of the woods.

For around a year, Carlo von Tiedemann (80) had a pacemaker that was supposed to help him with his amyloidosis. However, it is now known that the pacemaker recently had to be removed. The popular NDR presenter has had around three difficult months in hospital and rehab. The situation was life-threatening, as he reports to the “Bild” newspaper. Carlo von Tiedemann is certain that he has “just escaped death again.”

That’s how bad things were for Carlo von Tiedemann

“I came to the clinic with a bacterial infection in my coronary arteries,” explains von Tiedemann. The pacemaker that was inserted in February 2023 “had to come out; it was life-threatening. I was very difficult to breathe and had difficulty breathing.” He doesn’t know how it happened, but he also broke a vertebra in the hospital and caught pneumonia.

“The vertebra had to be operated on in two very long procedures and the follow-up treatment was also very painful,” continues von Tiedemann. Now he has to learn to move properly again.

The last few months have been a real torture for the long-time presenter of the “Aktuelle Schaubude”, but an end to the hardships is in sight. He was in the hospital for almost eight weeks and then spent four weeks in rehab. He is now going to inpatient short-term care for another month. “Then I hope the worst is over,” he says.

His wife Julia, to whom he has been married since 2012, gave him a lot of support during the difficult times. And he can look forward to his home near Hamburg, which has been converted to be barrier-free for him.
