Carnival can only take place at home this year. With these tips, an atmospheric break in a small group is guaranteed.

The corona pandemic is thwarting the carnival this year. The Weiberfastnacht and the foolish hustle and bustle on the street falls into the water, large carnival parades cannot take place – a disappointment for all passionate revelers. With a few tips and tricks, however, you can bring the crazy atmosphere into your own four walls.

Decoration and costumes: time for DIYs

Colorful decorations are needed to create a carnival atmosphere at home. You can easily make it yourself and give parents and children an entertaining crafting experience. Old glasses, for example preserving or jam jars, some craft glue and colorful confetti provide a few colorful tea lights. Brush the glasses with the glue and then sprinkle the confetti over them. Press the whole thing down a little so that it holds. Don't forget your gloves!

Homemade wreaths provide a visual eye-catcher. They can consist of old ribbon, balloons, feathers or artificial flowers. Fasten everything around a metal ring – preferably with wire – and spice it up with other carnival items. A colorful string of lights provides that certain something.

When it comes to costumes, you don't necessarily need an overpriced outfit from the Internet. Most of them already have matching clothes in their closets. How about a pair of blue dungarees and a red or green sweater à la Mario and Luigi? If you wear a yellow shirt, you can dress up as a minion.

A black and white striped sweater, black pants and a black hat create a prisoner look. All in black you look like a burglar. Khaki cargo pants and a turquoise tank top transform a woman into Lara Croft.

The right music – karaoke included

Schlager, Après-Ski and Ballermann: The right music should not be missing at Carnival. Dancing and singing work just as well in the living room at home and lift the mood in lockdown. Karaoke also creates a great atmosphere. Anyone who has a console, for example a Nintendo Switch, Playstation or Xbox, can buy a suitable game including a microphone: Popular variants include "SingStar", "Just Sing", "Sing it" and "We Sing".

Foolish video chat

Meetings in larger groups are not possible in February due to the applicable Corona regulations. However, there is nothing against a virtual carnival party. A video chat can be used, for example, to organize costume elections and traditional hand-made speeches. There are free online survey tools for voting.

Speaking of virtual: If you miss the classic carnival parades on Rose Monday or Carnival, you can watch the events of recent years online or watch them on the television without sound in the background.

Make a piñata

Piñatas are a must during Carnival time and are fun for young and old. There are various models to buy online from around 20 euros. You have to fill it yourself, however. You can do your own handicrafts more individually: You don't need more than a large balloon, scissors, newspaper, flour, water, acrylic paint and a rope.

First mix the flour and water, so that a sticky mass is formed. Inflate the balloon and cover with scraps of newspaper with the help of the mixed adhesive. Let the whole thing dry for at least a day – until the paper is firm. Then pierce the balloon and pull it out. The hole is for the candy and should be up later. Now it's time to decorate. Acrylic paint is suitable, but also colored crepe paper or cardboard. Finally cut two small holes around the large hole to pull the rope through for hanging.
