The biggest week of the year in tech is this week. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is here. ZDNET is on the ground in Las Vegas and reveals the latest products and concepts presented on the first day of the show.
While most of the new products presented at CES are concepts, like the hologram box, many announcements relate to technologies that we will be able to buy and use in the months or year to come. That’s what makes CES so exciting: the promise of a high-tech future that will make our lives better and easier in the near term.
Today we saw announcements from big names like Samsung, Phillips and HP, as well as innovative new brands with interesting concepts. We still have a few days left, but for now, here’s what impressed us most from the first day of CES.
1. Transparent TVs

The word of the first day of CES is “transparent,” thanks to two new transparent TVs from Samsung and LG. Samsung’s Transparent MicroLED demonstration is more of a vision of the future than a consumer TV we may soon find in our homes. Nonetheless, Samsung showed off its transparent MicroLED displays in different form factors during its CES First Look experience, demonstrating how the modular aspect allows buyers to tailor transparent displays to their liking.
Conversely, LG introduced its OLED T TV which displays images on a transparent OLED panel, creating a fish tank effect. Despite the “transparency,” our ZDNET editors at CES described the contrast levels as what you’d expect from LG’s OLED panels.

2. Roborock’s new Q Revo series

Roborock showed off its upcoming robot vacuum cleaners, including the Q Revo series. The Q Revo MaxV and Q Revo Pro are designed to deliver the same cleaning performance as Roborock’s premium devices, but at a lower price. Both of these models feature the new FlexiArm design, which helps tackle edges and corners, and work with 7000Pa suction to remove all the dirt and debris from your home.
The Multifunctional Dock 2.0 takes care of most of the dirty work for you: emptying, filling, drying and automatic washing. The Revo Q Series, however, stands out for its hot water wash and mop setting, which Roborock says helps disinfect your floors.
A mirror for your mental health

Baracoda’s BMind smart mirror combines AI and natural language processing (NLP) to analyze the feeling of the person looking in the mirror through their expressions, gestures and tones. It then adapts to your current mood and offers light therapy sessions, guided meditations and personal affirmations with the aim of improving your mood and better managing your stress.
During a live demo at CES, the mirror responded to our ZDNET editor’s having a bad day with encouraging words and changed the lights to a calming blue color while displaying an image of nature.
Phillip’s Palm Recognition Smart Lock

CES is always an opportunity to showcase a lot of connected home technology, and this smart lock from Phillips caught our attention from day one. Like the palm recognition technology found in Amazon One stores, Phillips is the first to integrate this technology into a consumer smart lock.
Contactless technology scans the veins in a person’s palm by simply holding their palm a few inches from the lock’s scanner. Users can add up to 50 different Palm ID options.
The lock uses Wi-Fi for connectivity, meaning there’s no need to purchase a separate hub. Additionally, it is also compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
HP Specter laptops with artificial intelligence

Of course, a key theme we expect to see throughout CES this year is artificial intelligence, and HP is releasing its new AI-powered Specter laptops. HP calls its AI assistant Superpower, and it can be customized to learn information about the user to generate text that contains more personal context than that created with other AI chatbots like ChatGPT, for example.
Described by the company as the “world’s most adaptive laptops with built-in AI technology”, Specter x360 laptops are triple-engine machines with CPU, GPU and NPU, which promises automatic performance optimization, with reduced fan noise and temperature based on open applications, laptop location, and battery status.
TCL’s huge mini QD LED TV

At an event like CES, bigger is better, and TCL’s QM89 TV is about as big as it can get. We spotted the 115-inch QD Mini LED TV at CES and were impressed not only by its size, but also by its 20,000 local dimming zones, anti-glare screen that lets you watch TV in any conditions, and its 2.1.2 channel speaker system with Dolby Atmos speakers.
It also has a 120Hz QLED display (144Hz with VRR) and an anti-glare screen coating. TCL’s built-in AIPQ Ultra processor powers these 20,000 dimming zones and uses AI to improve upscaling and color reproduction, making the picture super sharp and clear.
Sennheiser headphones that measure your heart rate

Sennheiser introduced three new headphones at CES, but the one that caught our attention the most was the Sennheiser Momentum Sport.
These headphones are optimized for fitness thanks to their main feature: a heart rate sensor and a body temperature sensor.
These two sensors integrate with fitness trackers, apps and subscriptions, like the Apple Watch and Health app, Strava and more, so you can seamlessly track your workouts and workouts. fitness measurements.
Samsung’s SmartThings app gets new AI features

Samsung announced new updates and features to its SmartThings app during its Day 1 press conference. The most important of these features is Map View, a 3D map of your home that makes it easier to access connected home devices. The app will allow anyone to create a 3D map by uploading their house plan or simply drawing the house plan on the app to create the plan.
Additionally, SmartThings Together can enable household members or guests to securely control specific connected home devices of your choice and create their own routines.
