For the occasion of CES 2024, it is Samsung’s turn to unveil its catalog ofgaming screens for 2024, at least the three series which will be equipped with QD-OLED panels. There we find the atypical Samsung Odyssey G9, as well as the Odyssey G8 and G6 which present themselves in a new light since they are flat screens, not curved as was the case before.
After LG and its slew of UltraGear monitors, Samsung is unveiling its catalog of Odyssey gaming screens at CES 2024, all equipped with QD-OLED panels.
Odyssey OLED G9: the juggernaut is back
Samsung is strengthening its position in the ultrawide screen market with its Odyssey OLED G9. No significant change compared to last year’s model, but a strengthening of the Samsung ecosystem, which also prevails on both the G9 and the G8.
The Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SD) therefore has a curved screen (1,800 R) with a 49-inch QD-OLED panel for a definition of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels, which therefore corresponds to a 32:9 format . The refresh rate is 240 Hz, the response time announced at 0.03 ms (GtG), while VESA DisplayHDR True Black certification is on the menu.
It will once again feature the in-house Tizen interface, just like the G8 and G6, on which we will find a number of streaming applications, but also the Gaming Hub and its cloud gaming services. The SmartThings Hub is also included, with Matter protocol compatibility for connected objects. As new features, the G9 and G8 now offer the Multi Control function. This feature will allow users to easily transfer images and text between their Odyssey screen and other Samsung devices, smartphones, tablets, or even Galaxy Book.
Odyssey OLED G8 and G6: two flat screens, a first in this range
With the Odyssey G8 and G6, Samsung is launching the first flat screens in this series. The G6 is also the smallest OLED monitor designed by Samsung. With its 27-inch diagonal and QHD definition, it features a QD-OLED panel in 16:9 format and a refresh rate of 360 Hz.
The Odyssey G8 sports a 32-inch panel, still QD-OLED, with 4K UHD definition and a refresh rate of 240 Hz. This is certainly half less than the latest monitor announced by LG with its 480 Hz , on the other hand LG’s screen uses Dual-Hz technology to achieve this and reaches this peak only in 1080p, while it remains limited to 240 Hz in 4K UHD.
These two new Odyssey screens should be equipped with two HDMI 2.1 ports, a DisplayPort 1.4 and a USB hub. Like the G9, they also feature VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certification. Finally, all three screens will have an OLED Glare-Free coating that is supposed to reduce reflections to achieve a good visual experience in “almost all lighting conditions”.
We will learn more in the near future, particularly regarding pricing and availability of these new PC monitors.
