Available on many brands of televisionsFilmmaker Mode is making a name for itself at CES 2024. It will soon benefit from an update which will bring it two additional features: support for Dolby Vision, in addition to HDR10, as well as automatic activation on the Apple TV+ application.

Filmmaker Mode Dolby Vision should only be available on a handful of TVs to start.

HDR Dolby Vision arrives in Filmmaker Mode

The result of close collaboration between certain television manufacturers and the UHD Alliance, and born under the impetus of Hollywood studios and directors like Martin Scorsese, Filmmaker Mode consists of delivering an image as it was thought and created by the filmmakers. This includes in particular the deactivation of image processing or even respecting the native frequency of the video source, with the aim of offering a more faithful cinematic experience, without the consumer having to adjust the numerous settings of their television to obtain this rendering.

After several updates since its creation in 2019, for example with support for ambient light sensors to adapt the brightness of the television in relation to that of the room where it is located, Filmmaker Mode will finally expand its support for Dolby Vision . This means that the mode will be activated with Dolby Vision content on compatible devices, and no longer only in SDR and with HDR10. In addition to this, the UHD Alliance announced the automatic activation of Filmmaker Mode with the Apple TV+ application, like what had already been done in 2021 with Amazon Prime Video.

Integration with LG and Samsung for the moment

Initially, Dolby Vision HDR with Filmmaker mode should only be available on the newly announced LGs. These include the manufacturer’s OLED series, with the LG OLED M4, G4, C4 and B4, but the functionality will also be deployed on certain QNED televisions, 85 inches and above for the moment.

The integration of Filmmaker Mode into Apple TV+ concerns LG and Samsung. On the other hand, nothing indicates yet whether this is a feature that will be reserved for 2024 televisions or if a simple update of Apple TV+ will allow users of previous ranges to benefit from it.

Designed to deliver an image that respects the vision of filmmakers (on compatible televisions), Filmmaker Mode will now offer Dolby Vision, on LG OLED televisions (and certain QNED) initially. Another feature is also approaching and concerns Apple TV+

Apple TV+

  • Sublime 4K and solid video throughput
  • Original content in HDR10 and Dolby Vision
  • Some very, very good series

Many months after its launch, the manufacturer does not have much to be ashamed of its platform. Certainly, the catalog remains light compared to the competition, but the series are all excellent. The service has opened up a little to third-party media and the video quality is undoubtedly the best currently available on the market. However, with its new high price, Apple is more than ever offering a dispensable product, but one that is worth trying at least for a few unmissable shows.
