PARIS (Reuters) – The CGT and Sud-Rail on Tuesday called on railway workers to accentuate the balance of power against the government’s plan to reform pensions by following a massive strike on January 31 in France by two days of walkout on January 7 and 8. february.
“Our federations propose to railway workers to act massively by strike on January 31, to meet in general assemblies from January 31 and to debate the intensification of action by a sequence of two consecutive days of strike on January 7 and February 8,” CGT Cheminots and Sud-Rail said in a joint statement.
“For lack of withdrawal of the text”, the two unions still propose “to consider the strike renewable by periods of 24 hours from mid-February”.
The pension reform project, characterized in particular by raising the legal retirement age to 64, arouses unanimous opposition from the unions, which took more than a million people to the streets on January 19 and are calling to a new day of mobilization on January 31.
The government remains willing to amend its plan but will not reconsider its decision to push back the retirement age to 64 because this would jeopardize the financial balance of the future system, said Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt on Monday.
