And if it was the end, for the Exynos chips? Invariably put in competition with their counterparts signed Qualcomm, they cringe consumers, who blame them for too high energy consumption and performance below expectations. So many reasons for Samsung to surrender.

The thing is not done, let us be clear. But a disturbing article from the South Korean site Naver claims that Samsung aims to develop a brand new in-house SoC that would equip its smartphones by 2025. And that, in the meantime, the Galaxy S23 and S24 would fly the Qualcomm flag.

The slow exile of Exynos

The chipsets Exynos does not have very good press. It must be said that the mere mention of the name is often perceived as a punishment for journalists and consumers: where the whole world is entitled to Samsung smartphones equipped with Snapdragon chips, Europe is dragging behind less efficient devices and more energy guzzlers.

Proof of this is the Galaxy S22 which, according to tests carried out by a videographer, is much faster in its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 version than its European counterpart under Exynos 2100.

Samsung itself seems to be giving up. In the Middle East, India and Africa, all of its smartphones are now launching with a Snapdragon chip under the hood. Europe therefore represents the last pocket of resistance.

Pocket which, according to Naver, is about to jump. And it is certainly not the few Samsung customers in this area who will make a difference in their account books (some Meizu and vivo mobiles are equipped with Exynos SoCs).

Hunt in Apple Land

Samsung’s ambition is not to fall into line and, like the overwhelming majority of its competitors, strengthen the hegemony – and its dependence on – Qualcomm.

According to Naver, Samsung has big ambitions when it comes to engineering. So much so that the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer has set up a team of a thousand people who will work on the design of a new in-house chip by 2025. The objective is clear: to surpass the chips of ‘Apple which, to this day, remain simply unbeatable in terms of speed and efficiency.

The use of Qualcomm would therefore only be temporary, and Samsung therefore plans to follow in the footsteps of Google which, last year, had taken the same path by developing its own Google Tensor chip for its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

A way for manufacturers to differentiate themselves, but above all to remain in control of their production chain, in a post-pandemic industrial context which is creating significant congestion in the pipeline from the main suppliers.
