Charges faster – VW ID.5: The SUV coupe drops its camouflage dress

Volkswagen has long sent the ID.5 camouflaged around the world, the Internet and the IAA – now the electric SUV coupé has been presented in “full splendor”. With practically the same length as ID.4, the space available should be roughly the same despite the flatter roof line. There is a choice of three engines, all of which are combined with the 77 kWh battery. Maximum WLTP range: 540 kilometers.

Logically, the big design surprise does not come, even if VW sounds that the “future-oriented bodywork looks independent from every perspective”. You have to look carefully to distinguish it from the ID.4. A little tip: The ID.5 does not have a roof spoiler. And the plastic paneling on the side is painted. The friendly look at the front with the standard LED headlights, which greet the approaching driver with a kind of glance, is the same for both. The GTX basically comes with matrix headlights.

In the standard version, the ID.5 measures 4.60 meters and is two centimeters longer than the ID.4. The dimensions of the GTX are the same as those of the ID.4: 4.58 meters. The wheelbase is 2.77 meters. The roof line is two centimeters flatter, which costs 12 mm of headroom on the back seat. Depending on the position of the rear seat backrests, the luggage compartment has a capacity of 549 to 1561 liters. An electrically powered tailgate and an electrically foldable trailer coupling are optionally available.

The cockpit of the ID.5 is almost completely free of switches and buttons. A compact display behind the steering wheel can be controlled via the multifunction steering wheel, the central twelve-inch screen via touch. Many functions can also be operated by voice input following the command “Hello ID”. The augmented reality head-up display costs extra.

Latest generation software
ID.5 and ID.5 GTX have new hardware and the new software generation 3.0 on board. This means that, in addition to software updates, other vehicle functions can also be installed over the air in the future.

The assistance systems, some of which are optional, include the “Travel Assist with swarm data” driver assistance system. It allows automated driving with the help of Car2X communication, ie swarm data from compatible vehicles of the Volkswagen fleet and signals from the infrastructure within a radius of up to 800 meters can be implemented and warn of danger spots, accident situations and stationary traffic.

One battery, three drives
In principle, there is a 77 kWh battery in the floor of the car, the charging power is 135 kW. Until now, VW’s ID models could only be filled with a maximum of 125 kW. The battery can store energy for the next 390 km in around 30 minutes. The ID.5 can draw alternating current with 11 kW. With a suitable infrastructure, bidirectional charging is possible at home.

The range is slightly higher than with the ID.4. On the one hand, the lower frontal area thanks to the flatter roof, as well as the favorable drag coefficient of 0.26 (GTX: 0.27), have an effect here.

The standard version of the new Wolfsburg-based Stromer will be powered by a permanently excited synchronous motor in the rear, which has either 128 kW / 174 PS (ID.5 Pro) or 150 kW / 204 PS (ID.5 Pro Performance) the rear wheels acts. They have a maximum torque of 310 Nm and a top speed of 160 km / h. Both are specified with a WLTP range of 540 kilometers. The sprint from standing to 100 km / h takes 10.4 or 8.4 seconds. In the rear-wheel drive versions, the turning circle is just 10.2 meters.

As the ID.5 GTX, the SUV coupé has an additional asynchronous motor on the front axle, which sends 109 hp and 162 Nm towards the front wheels. The system output of the all-wheel drive is 220 kW / 299 PS, the standard sprint value is 6.3 seconds. The GTX is only limited to 180 km / h. With the GTX, the battery lasts for up to 497 kilometers.

You have the choice between three suspension options: In addition to the standard suspension, a sports suspension with progressive steering is also available. Electronically controlled dampers are also available. The wheel sizes range from 19 to 21 inches.

The VW ID.5 can be ordered from the beginning of January, and the first copies will reach the customer in early April. The price list starts at 50,080 euros, for the GTX at least 57,500 euros are due.
