Two popular writers announce they are filing a lawsuit against OpenAI for copyright infringement.

For some time, the question of the data used by ChatGPT for its training has been much talked about, with the multiplication of complaints from people believing that this information was stolen by Sam Altman’s company in order to train its AI. Today, it is writers who go to court.

Complaints against ChatGPT, there have been in recent months from individuals. Some may have considered themselves victims of defamation, while others simply claimed that their data had been stolen. But this is surely the first time that distinguished writers have come in turn to take up arms.

The dark fantasy writer Paul Tremblay, author notably of The cabin at the end of the worldand Mona Awad have thus, according to CNBC, decided to go to court. Their grievance? The fact that ChatGPT was trained from their books, when they hadn’t given permission to OpenAI.

The door open to other trials?

Plaintiffs and Class Members have not consented to the use of their copyrighted books as training material for ChatGPT. Nevertheless, their copyrighted materials were ingested and used to form ChatGPT “, indicates the document of the complaint. As proof, the writers claim that the OpenAI chatbot is able to produce summaries of their works on request., which is only possible if ChatGPT was trained on the copyrighted works of the plaintiffs “.

This argument is certainly interesting, but will need to be substantiated. How to be sure that ChatGPT did not use public information on these books to produce its summaries? On the other hand, if it were found that OpenAI had directly drawn from literary productions protected by copyright, many would be the writers who could in turn ask, like Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad, for damages and interests.
