Timo Werner breaks his goal curse
The fans of FC Chelsea have been waiting for this moment since February 15: Timo Werner scores again and helps his team to win the top duel of the Premier League against West Ham United. However, the German striker should not be completely satisfied.
Football national player Timo Werner has put Chelsea on the Champions League course with his first Premier League goal in more than two months. Werner scored his sixth goal of the season in a 1-0 (1-0) duel against London rivals West Ham United just before the break (43rd). For the 25-year-old it was the first goal since February 15.
In the table, Thomas Tuchel’s team is fourth with 58 points and is now clearly on the royal class course ahead of neighboring West Ham (55). Jürgen Klopp follows with Liverpool FC (54) in sixth place, because the Reds gave up a victory in the 1-1 (1-0) against Newcastle United shortly before the end.
While Kai Havertz was not part of the starting line-up at Chelsea, Werner used his second good chance to score before the break and scored from eleven meters. The ex-Leipzig player now has eleven goals and nine assists in all competitions, so he was involved in more goals than any other Chelsea player. Shortly after the break (55th), Werner also missed the huge chance to make it 2-0 when he aimed from five meters next to the goal. West Ham’s Fabian Balbuena saw red in the 81st minute.
“That feels like a defeat”
Liverpool, on the other hand, gave away another important victory in the battle for Champions League participation. The still-master conceded the equalizer against Newcastle deep in stoppage time. On Monday, the Reds had led the 1: 1 in Leeds up to the 87th minute.
“It feels like a defeat,” said team manager Klopp and admitted: “Today we didn’t play as if we deserve the Champions League. Now we have five more games. Either we learn from it or we don’t play champions League. It’s that simple. ”
Mohamed Salah gave the hosts the lead with a dropkick into the corner in the third minute. The Egyptian is the first Liverpool professional to score at least 20 goals in three different Premier League seasons. Joe Willock (90. + 5) made the equalizer for long faces at Klopp and Co.
