China: 10 dead in a fire in Xinjiang

Ten people were killed and nine injured in the fire of a residential building in China’s Xinjiang province (Northwest), the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday (November 25th).

The fire broke out around 7:50 p.m. (12:50 p.m. French time) Thursday evening, according to the agency. “Ten people died, despite emergency care“, said the media. “The injuries of nine other people are not life-threatening“, he added, specifying that an investigation into the origin of the fire had been opened.

Fatal fires are quite common in China, due to poor safety standards and corruption among officials responsible for enforcing them. This week, 38 people were killed and two others injured in a fire at a factory in Anyang (Central), authorities accusing employees of mishandling.
