Sunday, March 27, 2022, Will Smith hit Chris Rock on stage at the 94th Academy Awards. On Instagram, Laurence Boccolini welcomed the gesture of the actor, who went on stage to defend his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
A sequence that has gone around the web… At the 94th Academy Awards, host Chris Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss by comparing her cropped hair to Demi Moore’s shaved head in the movie On equal terms by Ridley Scott. If this joke first made Will Smith laugh, it was after seeing his wife roll her eyes that he went on stage to strike Chris Rock. As the actor left, the presenter blurted out: “wow. wow. Will Smith just knocked my head off! It was a joke !“Seated in his seat again, the star yelled twice:”Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!“A little later, it was during his acceptance speech after receiving the Oscar for best actor that Will Smith said: “I want to apologize to the Academy. Love makes you do crazy things.“
After the broadcast of the sequence, Laurence Boccolini wished to salute the gesture of the actor. On a snapshot of the Oscars, she indeed wrote: “Even if full contact is never necessary, some slaps are like the gift we expected more… A man who comes to defend his wife! She’s the slap we’ve dreamed of sticking in our dreams to lousy critics, free bashing pros. This slap, I’m going to play it over and over again in my head because it does good to those who will never dare to get up to do the same when words hurt to make people laugh.“In the caption, however, she qualified her remarks by adding:”Violence is never a solution… That said… The violence of words is underestimated. So 1 everywhere!“
A gesture that is not unanimous
Following the position of the host, many Internet users have expressed themselves in the section of the comments. It can thus be read:Very few dare to defend their wife, I find that respectable on the part of Will Smith. We disrespect his wife, he answers, it’s normal and congratulations to him!” ; or : “Nothing justifies violence. But I imagine that a man who has had to watch his wife cry every day, lose her self-esteem, socially isolate herself and show so much resilience has every reason to be bruised by a joke about herOthers, disagreeing with the gesture, shared:It’s good, we trivialize violence. As soon as someone gets insulted, we can stick one on him” but also : “This joke was inelegant, hurtful, vulgar… However, we do not respond to (verbal) violence with physical violence… It shows weakness, helplessness… No one comes out of this apartment grown up… distressing !“
