Christmas: Four variants for the self-made Advent calendar

Creativity is required so that the self-made Advent calendar becomes a visual highlight. Hobbyists can find inspiration here.

There is still some time left to get Christmas presents. The daily opening of the advent calendar's door will start soon. A homemade variant is particularly enjoyable and leaves a lot of scope for design. You can find inspiration here.

Upgrade the paper bag variant

The most classic version of the homemade Advent calendars: hide surprises in small paper bags. If that's too dreary for you, you can hang up the small packages, for example on a longer branch – natural decorative elements are very popular at Christmas anyway. The piece of wood should be about one meter long and can be pimped up with a string of lights and small fir branches. A few golden Christmas balls or pine cones give the calendar that certain something. Another tip: mix the paper bags well when hanging them up, this will make finding the right number all the more fun.

Advent calendar as a book?

The next DIY tip sounds like a lot of work, but it isn't! The basis for the advent calendar book is an old, as large as possible file folder. 24 small packages can be attached to it with a hot glue gun, preferably twelve on each side. A little creativity is required to make the whole thing look Christmassy. The inside of the folder can be decorated with small snowflakes, glitter ribbon or a chain of lights, but don't forget the outside! Number the small packages nicely after sticking them on and fill them with little surprises. The advent calendar can be wonderfully sent by post and can be set up and filled again every year.

24 houses become a decorative landscape

If you want to combine decoration and advent calendar, you can rely on a landscape of houses. The individual boxes are available online, but with a little skill you can also make them yourself. All you need is white cardboard (not too thick), glue, sharp scissors, a gold pen and a few decorative elements such as small fir trees, pine cones or wooden stars. If you don't want to proceed with a sense of proportion, you will find numerous instructions on the Internet. A simple alternative to the angular houses are round cones, under which small sweets can be hiding just as well.

Christmas tree calendar for the little ones

Anyone who has decided on the self-made Christmas tree calendar should start collecting toilet paper rolls early, because 24 of them are needed. Creativity is hardly required for a beautiful result. The individual roles need a green paint. If you want to perfect the look, you can design three roles for the tree trunk in brown. Then stack all the rolls on top of each other in the shape of a Christmas tree and fix them with a hot glue gun. Cover the back with a piece of cardboard so that the contents do not fall out. After filling, close and number the front sides. When the time comes, the little ones can prick the correct number with their finger.
