For the needs of his science fiction film “Interstellar”, worn by Matthew McConaughey, Christopher Nolan went so far as to plant 200 hectares of corn near Calgary, Canada.
From the space epic Interstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan in 2014, we especially remember the spectacular sequences of exploration of the Endurance vessel through wormholes, the masterful scene of the planet-ocean, where each passing hour corresponds to an Earth year, or the 23 years of unread messages of Matthew McConaughey, in tears in front of his screen.
However, even in the first minutes of his feature film (considered by Internet users of AlloCiné as the best science fiction film with an average of 4.492 stars out of 5), the British director demonstrated his sense of precision and meticulousness by pushing realism to the limit, ready to make radical choices to avoid having recourse to computer-generated images.
This is particularly the case when we discover Cooper’s farm, on a land desolated by famine and drought, and the camera flies over the farmer’s immense cornfields (before they are finally ravaged by a dust storm).
Instead of creating these plantations in CGI, Nolan thus decided to employ the big means and to plant a real field of 200 hectares. A decision that was inspired by a certain Zack Snyder, who had already tried a similar experience on Man of Steel:

“Luckily Zack had grown quite a bit of corn, so I asked how much we could actually grow”told the filmmaker at the microphone of the HollywoodReporter.
“They had grown a few hundred acres [ndlr : 1 acre équivaut à 0,40 hectare]. So we investigated the issue. We looked near where we wanted to build our farm, near the mountains of Calgary [au Canada]. In the end, we had a pretty good harvest, which even brought us some money.”
In total, the operation cost a hundred thousand dollars, but allowed Nolan to get some truly impactful scenes at the start of his film. After the filming, the corn fields were therefore not destroyed, even offering some benefits to the production.
