  • Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter and Cyprus Interior Minister Nicos Nouris signed an agreement in Bern that aims to strengthen cooperation in the area of migration.
  • For the years 2023 to 2026, Switzerland will pay Cyprus 10 million francs.
  • With money from the cohesion contribution, Switzerland supports those EU states that are subject to strong pressure in terms of immigration.

The responsible Cypriot authorities and organizations can use the Swiss funds for different programs. On the one hand, these should affect the asylum infrastructure. On the other hand, projects should also support voluntary return and reintegration.

Those who are not granted asylum in Cyprus should be able to return voluntarily and safely to their country of origin.

Because those who do not receive asylum in Cyprus should be able to return voluntarily and safely to their country of origin. This was said by the Cypriot Interior Minister Nicos Nouris. He therefore welcomes Switzerland’s willingness to support the Mediterranean countries that are particularly hard hit by migration. According to Nouris, the main goal is a common asylum policy for the EU. But this is difficult to achieve.

The framework credit for migration is part of the second so-called cohesion billion. It is the basis of cooperation with Cyprus. The basic agreement on the cohesion billion was signed on houses of Parliament released in September 2021. In June 2022, the legally non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Brussels.

In general, Switzerland concludes bilateral implementation agreements with the partner countries, in which country-specific thematic priorities are agreed

A similar agreement has already been signed with Greece. The Swiss contribution here is CHF 40 million. Discussions are also currently taking place with Italy. The country is expected to receive 20 million francs.

Overall, over a period of ten years, Switzerland will support affected EU countries with CHF 1.3 billion in managing migration. The aim is to reduce the economic and social inequalities between the EU countries. Criteria for the selection of countries included the number of asylum applications per inhabitant or the identified structural needs.
