JNever has the popular expression “when it doesn’t want it, it doesn’t want it” seemed more appropriate to sum up failed behavior in politics. A real textbook case. For weeks, even months, Anne Hidalgo has been trying to relaunch her campaign. Relaunch is a strong term, because the start-up never took place.
The ordeal suffered by the mayor of Paris was not, however, inevitable. Representing the Socialist Party in 2022 could have passed for a heroic mission, given the state of the movement, left bloodless by François Hollande. But at no time did Anne Hidalgo manage to rise to the challenge. She had assured, during the last municipal campaign, never to abandon Paris for a national ambition. She changed her mind. Nothing irremediable.
