Collien Ulmen-Fernandes and Christian Ulmen are parents of a ten-year-old daughter. They pay attention to this in their upbringing.

Collien Ulmen-Fernandes (40) and Christian Ulmen (46) have been parents of a daughter since 2012. What the actor couple pays attention to when raising the now ten-year-olds, they now have in a double interview with the “Bild am Sonntag” reveal.

Education without gender stereotypes

For example, they want to show their daughter how meaningless gender clichés are. “Boys can play with dolls just as well as girls with building blocks,” says Ulmen-Fernandes. Both know the problem with classic gender roles from their own childhood: “I got the cars and my sister got the dolls,” remembers Christian Ulmen. He liked playing with dolls, “but always shamed.”

“I know that too. I used to like to meet Thomas and play car races with him,” adds his wife. “Sometimes I was told that as a girl I should actually play with barbies.”

This is how they deal with crises and mobile phone use

When it comes to topics such as war and the climate crisis, Collien Ulmen-Fernandes and Christian Ulmen are open with their daughter. “Of course we talked intensively with our daughter about the war. She was also very concerned about that,” says Ulmen. She is also “strongly sensitized” to the climate crisis and energy saving. “She is very careful that we always turn off the lights and admonishes us,” says the actor.

One thing the couple would most like to keep away from their daughter is the internet. “I think it would be great if she couldn’t google us,” says Collien Ulmen-Fernandes. Cell phone use is also a “difficult topic”: “Of course we would like to tell our daughter: It doesn’t exist. But since everyone at this age now has one, you don’t want your child to become an outsider because it is the only one who doesn’t have a cell phone.”
