Anyone who sends a message in a bottle hopes for an answer, but rarely really expects it. A boy from North Rhine-Westphalia actually received feedback – thanks to the Cologne fire brigade.

For many people, message in a bottle is part of their happy childhood memories: you put a roll of paper in a bottle, throw it into the water and hope that it will be found somewhere at some point – and maybe even an answer will come back. Most of the time the whole thing runs smoothly, and there is very rarely any feedback. A boy from Lüdenscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia, whose story his aunt published on Twitter, was all the more pleased.

She had made a message in a bottle with the five-year-old, and the little one had then sent her on a journey to the Rhine with his father. And sure enough, an answer came back. After a few days, the boy received a letter from the Cologne fire brigade, which had fished the bottle out of the river. The firefighters took the time to write a little text themselves.

Accordingly, the message in a bottle was discovered by participants in a basic fire service course during an exercise. The original aim was to save people who had fallen into the water from drowning. The firefighters came across the message in a bottle. “Finding something so special has been a tremendous pleasure for us,” the letter reads.

Apparently, the five-year-old had sent a treasure map with the bottle – unfortunately they couldn’t find the treasure, the firefighters let him know. Nevertheless, the child should have been very happy to have received feedback. To give the boy an idea of who he was dealing with, the firefighters also sent him a group photo. “What an effort they made. I’m totally touched,” said his aunt, enthusiastic about the reaction of the fire brigade.
