Committee: Trump’s summons would be “circus”

“If we suddenly summon the former president, we know that it will be quite a circus, so that’s not necessarily something we want to do in the first place,” Republican Adam Kinzinger told CNN on Sunday (local time). “But if he has information that we need, we will surely do that.” Kinzinger also issued a warning to all those who fail to comply with a summons from the panel. You shouldn’t think they’re going to be forgotten.

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon disregarded the committee’s subpoena, invoking the president’s prerogative to withhold certain information from Congress or the courts. But observers argue that Bannon had stopped working for the White House during the Capitol attack. At the beginning of the week, the committee wants to vote on whether criminal proceedings should be taken against him. The chairman Bennie Thompson has already taken the first steps.

The committee in the US House of Representatives is to investigate the background to the attack on the Capitol. Supporters of Trump stormed the seat of the US Congress in Washington on January 6th. Five people were killed, including a police officer. There had been heated arguments between Republicans and Democrats over the committee. Liz Cheny and Kinzinger are the only Republican members. Both are Trump critics.
