Constipation: 5 fruits to favor to fight against, according to a gastroenterologist: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

It is an element present in everyone’s life: having a bowel movement. When the passage is not as frequent as usual, we then speak of constipation. “The normal frequency of bowel movements varies widely from one individual to another (between three per day and three per week)”underlines Health Insurance.

To treat constipation, the doctor recommends hygiene and diet rules and prescribes, if necessary, a laxative. So, what should you put on your plate to combat constipation? On the social network TikTok, Dr. Joseph Salhab, an American gastroenterologist also known under the pseudonym @thastronomiehdoc, offers a series of foods to eat to treat this digestive disorder. This is not the specialist’s first attempt. Indeed, the gastroenterologist and expert in digestion, the liver and the pancreas, is used to sharing health tips.

Constipation: the list of the most effective fruits to fight against, according to this gastroenterologist

In a video published last December, the gastroenterologist draws up a list of five fruits to put on your plate to combat constipation.

The kiwi

The first food mentioned by Dr. Joseph Salhab is the kiwi. “I eat about two every morning,” begins the specialist before adding that he “Eat them with the skin on to get about 50% more fiber.” This fruit from China is said to be particularly effective against constipation. “Kiwi has been shown to be comparable to olive oil, prunes and saline in the treatment of constipation.” But the latter specifies that some people are allergic to it.

Pitaya, also known as dragon fruit

There are two types of dragon fruit, yellow and pink. Yellow dragon fruit is the doctor’s favorite. The latter explains that dragon fruit is a natural prebiotic, which allows it to help “the good bacteria in your gut to thrive and grow”. And the specialist adds: “if you cut it in half you get a natural biodegradable bowl”.

Berries

Another fruit favored by the specialist, berries, such as blueberries, blackberries or even strawberries. The latter are particularly advantageous for their fiber and water intake, “to help soften stools”. But that’s not all, the berries “are packed with antioxidants for gut and liver health.”

Apples

“An apple in the morning keeps the doctor away” said Winston Churchill. According to Dr. Joseph Salhab, these fruits provide a supply of pectin, which are soluble fibers. “These fibers are able to absorb and retain water”underlines the Vidal site. “The pectin in apples has been shown to relieve constipation”underlines the gastroenterologist on his TikTok account.

Pears

Last fruit listed by the doctor, pears “are really underestimated”, regrets the doctor. In fact, these fruits “contain sorbitol which is a natural sugar alcohol and it is a natural laxative”, specifies the expert on his TikTok account. Also, if your child suffers from constipation, the specialist indicates that “you can make a juice mix with pears and apples.”
