Every fourth person has broken off contact at some point

Is Corona dividing society? A Forsa survey provides information on this. Nationwide, one in four people has broken off contact with friends because of a dispute over a corona issue. In East Germany, one in three reports about it.

The fourth wave, the Omikron variant, a general compulsory vaccination: Even in their private lives, the Corona crisis does not let go of Germans. Slightly more than a quarter of those surveyed (26 percent) stated that they had broken off contact with someone they knew because of differing views on measures to be taken in the fight against the pandemic and vaccination requirements. That comes from the RTL / ntv trend barometer.

The regional gap is striking: More than every third East German (37 percent) reported having broken off contact with friends or acquaintances because of Corona. In contrast, only 25 percent of the West Germans surveyed said this. The vast majority have been spared this so far: 72 percent of those surveyed said that it has not yet happened to them that they no longer speak to a relative or acquaintance because of the corona measures or a debate about compulsory vaccination.

In general, the corona crisis is anything but a taboo subject in the private sphere. The vast majority of respondents (92 percent) openly discuss the pandemic and the rules and measures associated with it. Only six percent of those surveyed said that they did not address this openly. Both apply across all population groups.

There are only slight differences in party preference. Supporters from most parties said they spoke openly about the pandemic with those around them. This is particularly pronounced among the SPD (97 percent), the Greens (98 percent), CDU / CSU (95 percent) and the Left (94 percent). The lowest values, on the other hand, have the AfD and FDP – nine and eleven percent of the supporters of both parties said that they tend to avoid the Corona issue in their circle of friends.

Forsa surveyed a total of 1,002 people between December 10th and 13th for the survey. The stated values have a statistical margin of error of plus / minus three percentage points.
