They thought everything through carefully. A hygiene concept was developed. Waiters wore masks. A fever was even measured at the entrance to the event. A couple from Maine, USA hoped to celebrate their wedding in a small group despite Corona.
The bitter balance: As a result of the events with just 55 guests, a total of 177 people were infected with the corona virus. Seven sick people were hospitalized. Seven people died.
A current report by the American epidemic authority CDC shows how far-reaching the consequences of even small encounters can be during the corona pandemic. The infection process after the wedding was processed in it.
The Maine celebration is indicative of many other events this year. The number of participants was reduced, measures to protect against infection were taken and signs on site even advised guests to keep their distance. Everyone felt healthy at the time of the wedding. And yet there was a massive outbreak afterwards.
Because a guest had to be infected and infectious – without even knowing it. Overall, half of the participants at the celebration were infected with the corona virus. Among them were three employees who had only worked with masks.
The wedding is a prime example of the dangerous time span in which a person can already spread the coronavirus without experiencing symptoms. And how seriously cold symptoms should be taken right now. Because a particularly tragic aftermath of the wedding emerged in a nursing home 160 kilometers away. A close contact person for a wedding guest is said to have worked there – despite a fever, runny nose, cough and muscle pain.
Within the two days that the nurse came to work sick, 24 of the 44 residents contracted the coronavirus. Six of them died.
A total of 177 infections and seven deaths could recently be linked to the wedding via such chains of infection – more people than had even appeared at the celebration. The example shows how quickly the coronavirus can spread at events – and that human lives can depend on it.
