Corona current: Your place of residence determines your corona risk

Where we live seems to influence the risk of corona: depending on where you live, the risk of infection and a severe course of Covid-19 may be significantly increased.

Healthy nutrition, strengthening the immune system, exercising – people take proper precautions for the corona pandemic in order to keep their own risk as low as possible. In addition to lifestyle, however, a completely different factor seems to play a role when it comes to corona. And it's less quick to tackle: it's about where you live.

The place of residence seems to influence the corona risk. At least that is what current statistics suggest, which Gabor Steingart summarizes in his morning briefing. It's about the hard numbers, those of the infected and dead. And they ensure that, for once, you want to hike quickly north …

In fact, a clear north-south divide is visible in the corona pandemic: in southern Germany, there have been more cases of infected people as well as deaths. The latter in particular differ massively depending on the federal state.

While there are only around 800 identified infected people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, there are more than 60 times as many in Bavaria – namely a total of 49,000. Comparing Schleswig-Holstein with the currently 3,190 cases of infection again with Baden-Württemberg, a similar picture emerges – over 36,000 cases, which is 12 times more, were reported there.

It can therefore be said that the risk of corona infection is significantly lower in the north than in the south of Germany. And this in two respects: First of all, the risk of becoming infected is naturally lower with fewer cases. But even those who get Covid-19 seem to have a lower risk of serious progress. This in turn shows the Death rate in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was 2.6 percent is almost half as high as in Bavaria with 5.4 percent.

Now one may object that the size and population also play a role. However, there is another exciting number – the number of infected people and deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. And this is by far the highest in Bavaria, with 372 infected and even 19.9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. This is followed by Baden-Württemberg and Saarland with a similar number of sick people in relation to residents. For comparison: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has just 50 infected and 1.2 dead per 100,000 inhabitants.

Incidentally, the city states of Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin are also relatively high in terms of infection rate, with 283, 245 and 223 infected per 100,000 inhabitants. Central Germany more or less also occupies the middle places. The exception is North Rhine-Westphalia – with 243 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants and in the total number of 44,000 corona cases even in second place in the Germany ranking.
