In the spring, Greece was still considered a safe holiday destination. Now the region is sinking into chaos.
On the one hand, devastating fires have been raging for days, destroying entire regions and now even threatening the capital Athens. And on the Mediterranean islands, which are popular with tourists, the coronavirus is also a danger that is still not under control.
The latest chapter in the fight against the pandemic is written by the island of Zakynthos and the city of Chania in Crete. In addition to a night curfew, the authorities there have now also issued a ban on music in pubs.
Disaster control agency demands discipline
In both regions, the corona situation has worsened massively compared to the previous week and the number of infections has continued to skyrocket. The new regulations therefore apply from Friday and should last until at least August 13, reports the Guardian. The Greek Civil Protection Agency has called on the population to strictly follow the instructions.
Greece reported 2,856 Covid-19 infections and 16 related deaths on Wednesday. A total of 13,013 people have died in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic. (cat)
