Corona warning app: Experts doubt the effectiveness of the tracing app

According to experts, too few people in Germany have used the Corona warning app so far. They doubt their effectiveness.

Has the Corona warning app been ineffective in Germany so far? At least that's the opinion of experts. Gert Wagner, member of the German Advisory Council on Consumer Affairs, told "Welt am Sonntag": "In order for the Corona warning app to really bring something, the number of downloads should double." So far, more than 17 million people have downloaded the tracing app. Wagner went on to say: "In purely mathematical terms, if an infected person comes into contact with a stranger, the probability that both people will have the app is six percent."

The effectiveness is still limited even if it doubles. 25 percent of corona infections could be identified. However, only if these are also reported via the app.

Do you need a new solution?

Veronika Grimm, a member of the Expert Council for the Assessment of Overall Economic Development, said that contact tracking via the app would only be promising if 80 percent of the population had used it. "We cannot get there with a voluntary solution," says Grimm. Both the use and the reporting of a corona infection are so far voluntary.
