With a new function for the Corona warning app, it will be possible in future to check in at events using a QR code.

With a few weeks delay, the official corona warning app of the federal government was launched this Wednesday (April 21) a function for visitor registration has been expanded. Version 2.0 of the application now makes it possible to generate QR codes for events, restaurants or private celebrations and to use them to check in and out as a guest. In contrast to the criticized, private Luca app, no personal data is saved during this registration. Only the location, duration and type of event are recorded.

Anyone who has attended an event and then tested positive for a corona infection can share this information anonymously with the extension. Depending on the time at which other participants registered at the same event as the person who tested positive, they will then receive a warning of a potential infection via app. It says: “If you were on site for less than 10 minutes, you will receive a warning about an encounter with low risk (green tile). If the stay with the person who later tested positive for COVID-19 overlapped by 10 minutes or more, users * receive a warning about an encounter with an increased risk (red tile). ”

No substitute for personal registration

The advantage of the update is that infected people can now inform all other guests about a possible infection in the shortest possible time without first having to talk to the health department. However, because the app still does not collect any personal data, it does not replace the registration with your respective contact details, which is prescribed by the state regulations in the individual federal states.

It can take up to 48 hours before the update is displayed to all users, it is said. Another function is to be added to the app before this year’s summer holidays. With a kind of digital vaccination pass, people who have already received one or both vaccinations should be able to note this in the application.
