While the omicron variant of the coronavirus takes the top spot among new infections in most countries around the world, many questions about the risk and the transferability of the new mutation still remain unanswered. Even with the symptoms, nothing seems to be the same as it was in previous versions.
As the British newspaper “The Mirror” reports, experts have found that the symptoms of Omikron differ significantly from the classic signs of the corona virus.
According to the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are few clear signs of infection with Omicron.
Symptoms are “emergency warning signs”
A high fever, persistent cough and the loss of the sense of taste or smell are among the three main symptoms of a classic coronavirus disease.
The omicron variant, on the other hand, is more similar to a cold described by doctors as “mild”. Some symptoms are crucial indicators of an omicron infection. The CDC has declared that people with an omicron have a variety of other symptoms in addition to the three classic corona symptoms.
According to the CDC, depending on your skin color, you should watch out for gray or blue skin, lips or nail beds, as these signs could indicate low oxygen levels in the blood. The health authority refers to these symptoms as “emergency warning signs”. Means: If you notice them, you should consult a doctor immediately.
Omicron patients suffer from anorexia
Already in the summer there was talk of “Covid nails”, which showed grooves and reddish discoloration. British epidemiologist Tim Spector explains that such changes on the nails could be a holdover from a past corona illness. In the case of the omicron variant of the coronavirus, however, this seems to be a symptom of an active disease.
This also applies to loss of appetite. As English researchers found out, this occurs more frequently in people who test positive for Omikron. People who suffer from the virus variant hardly feel hungry and sometimes even have trouble eating.
According to a “Mirror” report, English researchers examined the symptom data from Omikron patients and compared them with information from Delta patients. It was noticed that Omikron infected people suffer from a lack of appetite significantly more often. In the case of Delta infected people, however, the symptom of loss of appetite practically did not appear at all. (chs)
