A royal family expert had described Prince Joachim as a “ticking time bomb” with regard to the possibility that he could decide to write an autobiography that has not yet been published. The prince is no longer afraid to speak his mind, it was noted with alarm. This also applies to his ex-wife, Countess Alexandra von Frederiksborg, as Danish media speculate – and that currently makes them particularly dangerous for the royal family and monarchy.

Countess Alexandra von Frederiksborg, 58, was married to Danish Prince Joachim, 53, for almost ten years. Their marriage resulted in their sons Prince Nikolai, 23, and Prince Felix, 20. Like their two half-siblings, Prince Henrik, 13, and Princess Athena, 10, they are to be stripped of their prince and princess titles by decision of Queen Margrethe, 82, with effect from January 1, 2023. A decision that shook both the four children and their parents.

Countess Alexandra of Frederiksborg has made herself independent of the royal family

While Joachim and his current wife Princess Marie, 46, assured as a precaution that they had no intention of leaving the royal family – on the contrary, they wanted to continue to represent the interests of Denmark and the royal family, they emphasized in an interview – the Countess the ties to the royal family have long been almost completely severed.

With the divorce from Joachim, Alexandra, previously “Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra of Denmark”, lost the royal title. Her marriage to Martin Jørgensen, 44, saw her relinquish both the title of Princess of Denmark and her status as a member of the royal family. Financially she is also on her own two feet: Since the 18th birthday of her younger son Prince Felix on July 22, 2020, she has no longer received an allowance at her own request. So there’s little that can stop Alexandra from speaking her mind clearly.

Queen Margrethe’s decision shocked her

“She’s completely out of everything, so she can say and do whatever she wants,” historian Lars Hovbakke Sørensen told Se og Hør. She proved that on the day the fateful press release of September 28, 2022 was published. She was the first to comment on the Queen’s decision, and at the time she also spoke on behalf of Joachim and Marie. A surprising step, since Alexandra has never commented negatively on the royal family since her divorce from Joachim. On the contrary, the countess often showed her ongoing loyalty to the queen and her family with words of praise and gratitude.

But since her two sons were affected by the monarch’s much-discussed decision, the pleasantries have come to an end. The mother lion in Alexandra broke through, claw and tooth. “We are all amazed by this decision,” the Countess said on the same day that her children’s titles were to be revoked. “We are sad and in shock. It comes like a bolt from the blue. The children feel left out. They cannot understand why their identities are being taken away from them.”

It was the first time that Alexandra made such statements. In doing so, she has shown that she is aware that she has nothing to lose, according to royal house expert Sørensen. Meanwhile, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie have to worry about their position in the royal house, their titles and their appanage. Meanwhile, Alexandra could only be stripped of her countess title. However, according to Sørensen, that would be “probably a foolish move” on the part of the Queen and would rightly be perceived as a cheap act of revenge.

Alexandra has become a risk factor

According to Sørensen, Margrethe knows very well that Alexandra still has a public voice and can get her messages across in big print in the Danish press – or even with her own publication. “It’s not unthinkable that she comes out with a book,” says Sørensen.

She and Joachim had the agreement that they would not go about many things to the press. There was an agreement on this, he emphasizes. But it cannot be ruled out that the Countess sees the decision a little differently in view of the developments of the past few weeks and is now ready to say more than she would normally be. “She has nothing to lose by being critical. She can almost do whatever she wants,” explains Sørensen.

The Danes could possibly be annoyed that she speaks up. But ultimately they would understand that Alexandra is speaking as a mother trying to protect her children. The royal family expert considers it likely that this will not be the last time you’ve heard from her. A ticking time bomb for Queen Margrethe, the heir to the throne Prince Frederik, 54, and Princess Mary, 50, as well as the monarchy, whose luster has a few scratches on the paintwork due to Margrethe’s recent decision.
