Coupe de France: which club holds the record for lost finals in this competition?


On the occasion of the broadcast of the final of the French Football Cup on Saturday May 7, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on France 2, Télé Star reveals which club holds the record for lost finals in this tournament.

Football fans will be in heaven on Saturday May 7, 2022. On that day, France 2 will broadcast live the French Cup final between OGC Nice and FC Nantes, from 9:05 p.m.. As a reminder, this knockout sports competition is organized each year by the French Football Federation (FFF). It is open to all clubs affiliated to it up to the last amateur level, including those overseas. It is one of the oldest French sports competitions, since it was born in 1917, under the name of Charles Simon cup. It was created at the time to support the unity of the country in the grip of the First World War, in the spirit of the Sacred Union.

Since its creation, many teams have taken part in the French Football Cup. Of course, some formations have distinguished themselves more often than others. This is particularly the case of Paris Saint-Germainwho holds the record for victories in this competition. Indeed, the capital club, which is the defending champion, won the Coupe de France in 1982, 1983, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021. PSG also lost in the final 5 times in 1985, 2003, 2008, 2011 and 2019. Marseille Olympics holds the sad record for the most finals lost in this competition. The Marseille club lost 9 times in 1934, 1940, 1954, 1986, 1987, 1991, 2006, 2007 and 2016.

Coupe de France: a 4th coronation for Nantes or for Nice in 2022

Nevertheless, OM have nevertheless won the Coupe de France 10 times in 1924, 1926, 1927, 1935, 1938, 1943, 1969, 1972, 1976 and 1989. For their part, the two finalists of the 2022 edition had already won the competition 3 times in the past. FC Nantes won in 1979, 1999 and 2000, while OGC Nice won in 1952, 1954 and 1997. When it comes to losing finals, Nantes have a head start over Nice. In effect, the Canaries lost 5 times in 1966, 1970, 1973, 1983 and 1993. For their part, the Aiglons lost only one final in 1978.
