Covid-19: do you know how to take your temperature? : Current Woman Le MAG

In the hunt for Covid-19 screening, we see many countries equipped with temperature sensors. Fever is the main sign of infection: it is found in 88% of cases. Hence the importance of monitoring this parameter, especially if other signs develop: cough, dry or oily, tiredness or shortness of breath. And make the right moves. In case of suspected infection, it is necessary to monitor its temperature twice a day.

Which thermometer to use?

The basic – but nevertheless effective – since the mercury thermometer is no longer sold, is the electronic thermometer (sold for around 10 euros). Another reliable option is the ear thermometer, which uses infrared radiation to measure fever. It is accurate because the eardrum reflects internal body temperature well, but it is not always easy to use it properly by "aiming" correctly in the ear canal. Forget contactless front thermometers or liquid crystal strips, they are not reliable enough.

Where to take your temperature?

If it is sometimes difficult to execute (in particular on oneself), taking at the level of the rectum remains the safest. Be aware that it reflects the core body temperature a little late (around 45 minutes). The ear temperature is also precise, provided you use the device properly.

Avoid taking the temperature under the armpit: it only measures the temperature of the skin, so the results can vary from 0.5 to 1.5 ° C (less) with the actual body temperature. Too unreliable in these times of coronavirus.

That taken in the mouth, finally, can be influenced by breathing, consumption of drink … It is generally necessary to add 0.5 ° C to obtain the central temperature, so we can consider that we have a fever from 37 , 5 ° sublingual temperature. In addition, to take it properly, keep your mouth closed and place the device precisely under your tongue.

Finally, remember that in case of fever, only paracetamol (Doliprane) is recommended. Avoid absolutely non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen.
