Covid-19: from Monday, vaccination will be mandatory in private companies in New York

UNITED STATES – To fight against the resumption of the epidemic, the city of New York is launching compulsory vaccination in companies. A measure rather well accepted by employees of the private sector but which still has its detractors.

From next Monday, in New York, vaccination will be compulsory in companies. A measure that very few dispute. “It’s common sense. Me, I’m already vaccinated”, says a New Yorker in the TF1 20 h report at the top of this article. “If it can reduce hospitalizations, then, for me, it is justified”, adds a young woman.

What do the some 200,000 business leaders in the city think who will have to apply this measure? From next week, bosses will have to keep a register with the vaccination dates of their employees. In the event of an inspection, an employee present and not vaccinated may be dismissed and the employer will receive a fine of 1000 dollars. “It might sound brutal or harsh but it’s not that bad. They don’t do this to annoy traders like me, it’s to protect people.”, assures Saïd, owner of a shop.

Saïd is not worried anyway. Its three employees are in fact already vaccinated. It must be said that in New York, after compulsory vaccination for town hall employees, caregivers and teachers, no one is surprised that the measure is arriving in the private sector where some had even anticipated.

A 91% vaccination rate in New York

On Wall Street, we took the lead. Vaccination is already compulsory for all employees in the banking sector. No employee enters the New York Stock Exchange building without providing proof of vaccination. It is the same for a building which houses several editorial offices of journalists. This American city has one of the highest vaccination rates, with 91% of New Yorkers who have already received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The mayor took this measure to approach 100% but it is not unanimous. In a hairdressing salon, the boss doesn’t even want to talk about it. “It’s between me and my doctor”, she says. “It’s not really our choice but they force us to do it and then everyone is vaccinated in New York but people still get sick so I don’t understand what the point is.”, adds his employee.

New York is currently registering 10,000 new cases per day on average, twice as many as in March 2020. On the other hand, the city has five times fewer intensive care patients in its hospitals than a year ago and half.
