Covid and vacation rentals: what are the rules?

At the beginning of August, the first tourist reports can be established. The Covid-19 pandemic first changed the situation when it comes to destination. This year, for vacation rentals, rural stays are popular: according to the Airbnb rental platform, they represent 45% of bookings, against 24% in summer 2019. City destinations remain popular with travelers, but Paris only represents 10% of all stay searches, marking a significant drop compared to May 2021.

Destinations such as Trélans in Lozère, La Couarde-sur-Mer in Charente-Maritime or Coggia in Corse-du-Sud have worked well. In general, the most popular departments for vacation rentals are Var, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Vaucluse.

The same goes for Maeva, a brand of the Pierre & Vacances and Center Parcs group, which adds that Savoie was particularly attractive this year with a 45% growth in bookings over the last four weeks. “There is a craze for outdoor vacations and private rentals. The latter are attractive for the space and independence they offer ”, explains Nicolas Beaurain, Managing Director of Maeva.

Rentals of private homes represent 26% of bookings, up 5 points compared to 2019, even if the campsite remains the number one destination for holidaymakers, with 57% of sales. Reservations are rather made at the last minute: more than six in ten July-July visitors have booked their holidays between June and July, or 12 points more than a year excluding Covid-19 and 38% of July visitors have booked less than a month. before their departure. Stays are of short duration: 63% of stays are one week and 24% of stays last more than ten days.

Strict health protocol

“Whatever the destination, the cleanliness of the rental is essential”, adds Nicolas Beaurain. All tourism players are also supposed to follow a very strict health protocol put in place by the National Union for the Promotion of Vacation Rentals (UNPVL) at the start of the health crisis and updated regularly.

The recommendations are particularly complex.

Between two tenants, maintenance must be done so as not to return to a room that has already been cleaned and disinfected, which means that it is necessary to start with the upper floors downwards if the accommodation has several levels and to the cleanest area to the dirtiest area.
