In Croatia, a sled dog saved a hiker from freezing to death. According to Croatian media reports on Tuesday, the Alaskan Malamute dog lay down on hiker Grga Brkic when he fell into a mountain gorge. The dog warmed him for 13 hours until the emergency services arrived.

It was difficult for the rescuers to get to the victim. The obstacles included snow, black ice, torn branches and landslides. “The friendship and love between people and dogs are limitless,” enthused the Croatian mountain rescue service on its Facebook page. A photo distributed by the rescuers shows how the dog lay in a circle on the victim.

“This dog is a real miracle, friendly, personable – maybe he likes people more than other dogs,” said its owner, Brkics cousin, of the daily newspaper “Jutarnji List”. Alaskan Malamutes are known for their thick fur and stamina.
