On New Year’s Eve, many cruise ships traditionally meet in front of the island of Madeira to end the old year with fireworks and to welcome the new year. For a cruise ship, this celebration fell through because of a corona outbreak: The “Aida Nova” was stranded in the port of Lisbon, as the “Lübecker Nachrichten” reported.
Instead of a two-day stay in the Portuguese capital, the crew and guests now have to stay in the port for five days. Because several members of the crew tested positive for the corona virus and had to leave the ship. Apparently so many people are affected that one has to wait for replacement staff. By Sunday at the latest, the “Aida Nova” should set course for the Canaries again and dock in Lanzarote.
Guests take the corona delay with ease
However, it is not the travel delay that causes red heads on board, but rather the sun, which shines at full power in Lisbon. Blick reader Matthias Meyer (48) says: “We feel just as comfortable and safe here as in Switzerland”. Although the mask requirement applies on board, that is not a problem for the civil engineer. “We take it easy and see what’s new every day”.
Since the trip lasts from December 22nd to January 8th, a few stops will probably be left out. “So there are unfortunately no additional vacation days,” laughs Meyer. The mood in the background seems exuberant, the Swiss confirms: “Everything fits, the people are in a good mood”. The captain is also “a good one” because he informs the guests about the state of affairs every few hours. In addition, all travel guests would be tested for the corona virus. “We can go ashore if we want,” explains Meyer. So you can at least stretch your feet a little. “It’s just a shame that the weather is a little colder than expected”.
Caribbean no longer allows cruise ships to dock
Reports of corona outbreaks on board cruise ships have been increasing for days. Over the Christmas holidays alone, infections were reported on over 60 ships, according to the Washington Post. For this reason, some Caribbean islands even refused to allow the cruise giants to dock in their ports. (chs)
